Punctuation for Research

Back to Research

Does this sound crazy? Not only do you need to worry about punctuation for writing but for RESEARCH??

Actually, once you learn to use a few handy pieces of punctuation, your information seeking will be much easier.

Let me show you:

  • The * (shift, 8) will complete the ends of words for you and search for addition endings to a root word.

For example:
the root word, library, can be slightly changed to librar* (take off the y and add the *) so that now you can find the words, library, libraries, librarians, and librarian all in one search.

But remember!!!! You must take off the letters at the end of a word that complete that word. For example, library*, cannot find any other words because the "y" completes that word.

Understand?
  • The " " (quotation marks) will tell the computer that you want the words within the quotes to be searched together as a phrase. For example, "Mary Lamb" will only find those words when Mary is in front of Lamb and Lamb is right behind Mary. If you don't surround those words with quotes you may have many hits full of Mary and Lamb but not necessarily together.

This trick works especially well when you want a proper name/noun or a phrase such as heart disease. Searched separately you might not get what you want but searched as "heart disease" you should get information just about heart disease and related issues.
